SS 317 is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic alloy that comes with the greater resistance to the chemical attacks in comparison to the general chromium-nickel alloys like SS 304 and SS 316L. Besides, 317 also provides greater strength level at raised temperatures i.e. higher creep, stress-to-rupture, and tensile strength.
Alloy 317L is an austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content that gives better corrosion resistance in comparison to 304L and 316L alloys. Due to less percentage of carbon, SS 317L is immune to sensitization experienced during welding and other thermal procedures.
In the annealed environment, alloy 317L can be non-magnetic, however the magnetic characteristics could return with welding.
Applications of 317L stainless steel
• Used for desulfurization
• Chemical procedures
• Petrochemical
• Used to make paper and pulp
• Used in condensers for power generation
• Pharmaceutical plants
• Food processing plants
Characteristics of 317L stainless steel
• Increased level of normal and restricted corrosion as compared to 316L
• Satisfactory formability
• Good for welding procedures
