Alloy 904L is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel that has less concentration of carbon. Alloy 904L is mixed with copper to increase the resistance to strong reducing acids i.e. sulfuric acid. It has the ability to resist stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion. Alloy 904l is non-magnetic and possesses exceptional forming and welding characteristics.
Other contents found in it include molybdenum and nickel in high abundance. This grade provides nice oxidation resistance, though it loses its structure when placed under high temperatures, especially above 400° C.
Alloy 904L can be hardened using thermal procedures. It can be solution heat-treated at 1090 to 11750° C, giving the instant cooling right after. Under cold atmospheres, these grades can be easily molded to a tiny radius. These alloys hold the ability to be machined following any general procedures.
Its major applications include
• Wires used in electrostatic precipitators
• Oil refining industries
• Seawater cooling equipment
• Gas scrubbing machines
• Pulp and paper making industries
• Acetic, phosphoric and sulfuric acid processing equipment
